Sankofa Behavioral Decoder™ Framework
Look Again Before You Label.
Behavior is information.
Before deciding what a behavior means—or how to respond—the Sankofa Behavioral Decoder™ invites us to look again. This culturally responsive, trauma-informed, developmentally aware, and strengths-based framework helps us explore what may be influencing observable behavior before moving toward a more intentional response.

A Different Way to Understand Behavior
Too often, we begin with one question:
“How do I stop this behavior?”
The Sankofa Behavioral Decoder™ asks us to consider another question first:
“What might this behavior be telling me?”
Behavior does not occur in isolation. Our experiences, relationships, environments, emotions, stressors, developing skills, identities, strengths, and needs can all shape what happens in a given moment.
We also bring something to those moments - our expectations, experiences, assumptions, stress, cultural beliefs, triggers, and interpretations.
The Decoder creates space between what happened and what we decide it means.
That space gives us an opportunity to respond with greater intention.
The Five Lenses
The Sankofa Behavioral Decoder™ invites us to examine behavior through five interconnected lenses
LOOK BACK
What came before?
Consider history, previous experiences, recurring patterns, and what may have happened before the behavior appeared.
LOOK AROUND
What's happening around the child?
Consider environment, relationships, circumstances, expectations, transitions, and other contextual influences.
LOOK BENEATH
What might be underneath the behavior?
Move beyond what is immediately visible and remain curious about emotions, needs, stressors, developing skills, or other factors worth exploring.
LOOK WITHIN
What might I be bringing to my interpretation?
Consider your expectations, assumptions, experiences, emotional responses, and interpretations.
MOVE FORWARD
How can I respond intentionally?
Understanding creates an opportunity to move from automatic reaction toward a response that considers both the person and what the situation requires.
Understanding Is Not Excusing
Connection + Accountability Can Coexist.
Understanding why a behavior may be happening does not automatically make that behavior acceptable.
A person can need support and a boundary.
A person can struggle with a skill and remain accountable for learning a different way.
We can acknowledge emotions without agreeing with every action that follows from them.
Curiosity does not eliminate limits.
Compassion does not require permissiveness.
Accountability does not require us to abandon connection.
The goal is not to excuse behavior.
The goal is to respond to it more effectively.
Built on a Stronger Foundation
The Sankofa Behavioral Decoder™ Framework is grounded in four interconnected orientations.
CULTURALLY RESPONSIVE
Recognizes that behavior, expectations, communication, and relationships exist within cultural and social contexts.
TRAUMA
INFORMED
Recognizes the impact of trauma and adversity while emphasizing safety, connection, and healing.
DEVELOPMENTALLY AWARE
Considers developmental stage, abilities, expectations, and individual differences when interpreting behavior.
STRENGTHS
BASED
Focuses on resilience, capacity, existing strengths, resources, and possibilities for growth.
The Decoder generates hypotheses to explore - not diagnoses or conclusions.
Beginning With Parents & Families
The first major application of the Sankofa Behavioral Decoder™ centers Black parents and families.
The Sankofa Behavioral Decoder™ was developed with Black parents and families at its center, creating space to look beyond what is immediately visible and consider the broader story surrounding a child's behavior.
Its first major application is introduced through The Missing Manual for Black Parents: Is This Behavior - or Is My Child Struggling?
The book moves beyond simply asking parents to manage difficult behavior. It invites families to explore a harder question:
“What am I actually looking at—and what does my child need from me next?”

The Missing Manual for Black Parents:
Understanding What’s Beneath Your Child’s Behavior — Without Losing Connection, Boundaries, or Accountability
Featuring the Sankofa Behavioral Decoder™ Framework
The Missing Manual for Black Parents helps parents move beyond quick labels and surface-level behavior management to consider what may be happening beneath a child's behavior—while preserving connection, boundaries, and accountability.
The book provides a deeper application of the Decoder within the everyday realities of raising Black children and families.
More Is Coming
The Sankofa Behavioral Decoder™ is being developed beyond the pages of one book.
Additional resources will continue to build upon the framework through practical tools, guided resources, educational materials, workshops, and professional learning opportunities.
Some components of the Decoder are intentionally reserved for these deeper applications.
Understanding the philosophy is only the beginning. Learning how to apply it is where the deeper work begins.
