Welcome to Sankofa Healing Haven: Looking Back, Healing Forward
There is meaning in a name.
When I chose the name Sankofa Healing Haven, I wanted it to represent more than a mental health practice. I wanted it to reflect a philosophy of healing—one that recognizes the importance of our past, honors the strength it took to arrive at the present, and creates space for growth, restoration, and transformation.
At the heart of Sankofa Healing Haven are two powerful symbols: Sankofa and the phoenix.
Together, they tell a story about healing.
What Does Sankofa Mean?
Sankofa comes from the Akan people of Ghana and is commonly understood through the wisdom:
“Go back and get it.”
Sankofa teaches us that moving forward does not require us to forget where we have been. Sometimes, in order to move forward, we must be willing to look back—to retrieve the lessons, wisdom, strengths, identity, and pieces of ourselves that may have been forgotten, buried, or left behind.
In mental health and emotional healing, this idea is especially meaningful.
Our past experiences can influence how we see ourselves, how we relate to others, how we respond to conflict, how we manage emotions, and what we believe is possible for our future.
Looking back, however, does not mean living in the past.
It means understanding it.
It means asking:
What happened to me?
How has it affected me?
What did I learn in order to survive?
What still serves me?
What am I ready to release?
And what strength, wisdom, or part of myself do I need to reclaim as I move forward?
That is Sankofa.
The Phoenix: A Symbol of Rebirth
The phoenix adds another layer to the philosophy of Sankofa Healing Haven.
Across traditions, the phoenix has become a powerful symbol of renewal, transformation, resilience, and rebirth. It is known for rising from the ashes and beginning again.
But the beauty of the phoenix is not simply that it rises.
It is that the ashes are part of its story.
Healing does not require us to pretend that painful experiences never happened. It does not erase grief, trauma, disappointment, anger, loss, fear, mistakes, or difficult chapters of our lives.
Instead, healing allows those experiences to become part of a larger story.
A story in which pain is acknowledged without being given permanent control over the future.
A story in which survival can eventually make room for living.
A story in which we discover that beginning again does not always mean beginning from nothing.
We begin again carrying wisdom.
Where Sankofa and the Phoenix Meet
Sankofa tells us:
Look back and retrieve what you need.
The phoenix reminds us:
You can rise and become something new.
Together, these ideas reflect the foundation of Sankofa Healing Haven.
We believe healing can involve looking backward and moving forward.
It can mean understanding old patterns while developing new ones.
It can mean acknowledging wounds while discovering strengths.
It can mean grieving what was lost while making space for what can still be created.
And sometimes, it means reclaiming parts of ourselves that difficult experiences taught us to hide.
What Healing Looks Like Here
Sankofa Healing Haven was created as a space where individuals and families can engage in meaningful therapeutic work with dignity, compassion, accountability, and hope.
Our work recognizes that people do not exist outside of their experiences, families, communities, cultures, relationships, and environments. Healing therefore cannot always be reduced to simply asking, “What is wrong?”
We are also interested in understanding:
What happened?
What has helped you survive?
What strengths already exist?
What patterns are no longer helping?
What do you need now?
What would healing look like for you?
This perspective guides our therapeutic work with children, adolescents, adults, caregivers, and families.
It also guides the resources we create.
Through therapeutic tools, educational materials, activities, books, worksheets, and other resources, Sankofa Healing Haven seeks to make emotional wellness understandable, practical, culturally responsive, and accessible beyond the therapy session.
Because healing does not happen only during an appointment.
It happens in homes.
It happens in conversations.
It happens when a child finally finds words for a feeling.
It happens when a caregiver responds differently than they did before.
It happens when someone recognizes a pattern and decides to interrupt it.
It happens when a person establishes a boundary.
It happens when a family learns a healthier way to communicate.
And sometimes, healing happens quietly—in the moment someone realizes:
I do not have to remain who I needed to become just to survive.
A Haven for the Journey
The word “Haven” was chosen intentionally.
A haven is a place of refuge—a place where there is room to feel, reflect, learn, rebuild, and grow.
That does not mean the work will always be comfortable.
Meaningful healing can require difficult conversations, accountability, vulnerability, new skills, and the courage to examine things we may have spent years avoiding.
But difficult work can occur in a space grounded in respect, humanity, and hope.
Sankofa Healing Haven exists to help create that space.
Looking Back. Healing Forward.
This blog will be another extension of that mission.
Here, we will explore topics related to mental health, emotional wellness, parenting, childhood and adolescent development, trauma, grief, anger, relationships, coping, resilience, family healing, professional practice, and the many realities that influence how people experience mental and emotional health.
Some conversations will focus on understanding the past.
Others will focus on navigating the present.
And many will focus on building something different for the future.
Because healing is rarely a straight line.
Sometimes we move forward.
Sometimes we revisit.
Sometimes we discover something we thought we had already resolved.
Sometimes we rest.
Sometimes we rebuild.
And sometimes we rise.
That is the spirit of Sankofa Healing Haven.
We look back—not to remain there, but to retrieve the wisdom we need.
We honor the ashes without allowing them to define the entire story.
And, like the phoenix, we recognize the possibility of transformation.
Look back. Reclaim. Heal. Rise.
Welcome to Sankofa Healing Haven.
Where healing honors the past and makes room for what comes next.
